A hit movie came out in March that is said to be the story of actual events that happened to one couple in Connecticut, after they claimed to have moved into what was once a funeral home. The couple said their eldest son began seeing spirits, and both the wife and husband made claims that they were raped by demons.
The owner of the home said these claims were impossible, and wouldn’t let the couple move out of the house. The couple brought in ghost hunters, and then those hunters brought in a writer to tell the story behind the house and the investigation.
However, the author said the stories told by the family involved didn’t mesh well, and he made up a lot of the ‘true story’ instead of basing it on what he was told. What do you think of this? Are movies based on true stories really true at all?
Now, we see movies come out all the time where people come onto screen and do amazing things with their mind. They create new worlds, places for them to live and they are all in their minds. The Matrix comes to mind. There are others of course. Now in February, we had a movie called Push come out where a government agency was chasing down people with special talents to use for the government. Heroes also has had this at plot line.
Well, it isn’t just something you can see in the movies. A recent article in Maxim talks about a government agency that is looking into using people with special talents in the Cold War. The secret government agency was then known as Stargate, and it was used during the days of the Cold War to find out if psychics could be trained to spy on Russia. One man opened up about the agency now. You have to wonder if such an organization still exists today. What do you think?
The Day The Earth Stood is a movie starring Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly in a remake of a movie from 1951. This one hit theaters on December 12th, and it dominated the box office in its first weekend of release. In this one, we see an alien being land in the middle of Central Park. We soon learn the alien has taken the shape of a human man, and his intentions aren’t clear. However, we learn he is there to save the Earth. Jennifer Connelly plays a scientist that ends up helping the alien Klatu played by Keanu Reeves.
She stays with him from the point where he leaves his captivity until he leaves the planet earth. It is doing her time with him that she learns he is not there to save mankind on Earth, but he is there to save the planet from mankind. The world and all on it will be destroyed and the planet will be able to start over. However, Connelly’s character begs for the earth to be giving another chance, and by the end of the movie she convinces Klatu that mankind can change and the world can go on with mankind on it. Klatu works to prevent the planet from destruction, and mankind is given one more chance.
This movie was excellent. I won’t get started on the remake debate. We know we have way too many remakes, but this is one remake that actually works. It was made during a time much different than ours, but the message the film sends is strong and important to our lives today. The world is slowly dying around us. Global warming is a fact, and it is also a fact that the planet earth is one of the few planets in our galaxy that can sustain a life such as ours. This movie shows us that violence and the way we live our lives now will only lead to the death of this planet.
The movie was well acted and simple, but powerful. To me the most standout performance was by newcomer Jaden Smith. Yes, the son of Will Smith. Something tells me he’ll be one to watch develop. If you’ve seen this movie, what did you think?
Yesterday, I was watching television when I came across Close Encounters of the Third Kind on AMC. It was being shown as part of their Thanksgiving marathon. For those that don’t know what a close encounter of the third kind is, it is contact with an extraterrestrial. This movie from 1977 is from Steven Spielberg, and it stars Richard Dreyfuss. It follows a man’s journey when he becomes obsessed with unidentified flying objects. People think he has lost it. His wife leaves him and takes his children with her.
By the end of the movie, we see that he isn’t crazy. Several small space crafts communicate with human kind before a larger craft comes down to communicate. After a long moment of time doing this, the ship finally opens and out walks several humans that had been abducted over the years. Abduction is a close encounter of the fourth kind. Some of the people being returned had been missing for years. Some were from the mysterious Flight 19, which I plan to talk about at another time. The movie ends with Dreyfuss’ character being taken into the spaceship by the alien beings.
Until I watched the movie last night, I hadn’t seen it in years. I forgot what an amazing movie it actually is. It is a classic science fiction film from one of the best. The last half hour of the film with the communication and the eventual landing of the space craft is really some of the best scenes in cinematic history. The fact that musical tones are used to communicate shows us that music is universal. The first sighing of the alien had me completely engaged with the movie. It is definitely one of the best, and it makes us think about that we are not alone. We really can’t be alone.
